AFP: Aug 21 Newsletter – Hitting Our Stride

AFP Oregon

Tax Repeal Update

AFP Volunteers across Oregon really hit their stride this week in the effort to give voters the option to repeal the Legislature’s job killing tax increases.   Completed signature sheets are pouring in to the AFP Volunteer HQ, and we receive an average of 100 single signer petitions on each measure every day.

AFP Staff have now completed over 20 AFP Town Hall meetings to train AFP members and others how to quickly and legally circulate petition sheets.  Combined with our July trainings in Chapter meetings, thousands of Oregonians are now out seeking signatures. But the job is not finished!  Please do not stop gathering signatures on any active petition no matter how well we believe we are doing!

This Week’s Results

1.  Marion County (way out in front)

2.  Deschutes County

3.  Benton County

4.  Douglas County

5.  Lincoln County

6.  Clackamas County

7.  Josephine County

8.  Yamhill County

9.  Wallowa County

10.  Baker County

Note the presence of relatively low-population counties in the Top 10.  This is a testament to hard work by the local AFP Chapter Leaders, our signature captains and the many volunteers out in the trenches.  Note that the differences between some of the counties are very small – 2nd place was decided by just one signature, for example.  Don’t let your County miss by one signature!  Get out there and get those signatures!

Health Care & Gas Tax Repeal Petitions Available

There are now four tax repeal efforts underway.  AFP is officially involved with Oregonians Against Job Killing Tax Increases which is doing a tremendous job of coordinating the paid and volunteer efforts on Petitions 301 and 302 which would ask voters to repeal personal income and business income tax increases.

Petition 303 would ask voters to repeal a tax on health insurance premiums and another tax on hospitals.  These provisions – if allowed to stand – will increase the cost of health care in Oregon and create a huge new state bureaucracy to oversee health care.  AFP Josephine County Chapter Leader Jack Swift is one of the Chief Petitioners on this repeal effort.

Petition 304 would ask voters to repeal a gigantic increase in transportation taxes, including a 6 cent per gallon gas tax increase, an increase in vehicle registration and titling fees and an increase in truck taxes.  Additionally, this legislation funnels more money into wasteful mass transit, pedestrian and bicycle projects, and creates new land-use restrictions.

AFP opposed both of these pieces of Legislation during the Session, and supports giving voters a say in repealing them.  Petition sheets are available from the Volunteer Headquarters (503-598-9800) and single signer petitions are available here.
