From the State Director – President Obama returns to Oregon this coming Friday, and AFP Members from across the state need to be there to greet him.  Details are sketchy, but the President’s trip appears to be a visit to an Intel plant in Hillsboro.

Please plan on being on hand to welcome the President back to Oregon, and to remind him that YOU are AFP!  Please click here* to register for this free event, or to purchase an “I Am AFP!” Obama Answer tee shirt to wear to the rally.

See you there!

Plastic Bag Ban Poll

State Representative Kevin Cameron is hosting a poll on the plastic bag ban on his website.

Thank you to everyone who completed the AFP Action Alert on this issue.  We generated 1000 email messages into the capitol in 24 hours!  Grocery Industry lobbyist Joe Gilliam – who supports the bag ban – complained about AFP-Oregon’s effectiveness during his testimony at the hearing!

If you haven’t completed AFP’s “Action Alert” you may still do so by clicking the link in the Action Alert email that was sent to you or by clicking HERE*.

New Lane County Chapter Leader Battles Transit Waste

Like a lot of AFP Members, Lane County Chapter Leader Jeff Lozar is kind of new at this stuff.  He’s not used to things like speaking in public, marching around with signs and the other basic activities in which AFP Members engage.  On Tuesday, however, he found out his fears about speaking were groundless during a hearing on whether to build a wasteful, job-killing transit project in Lane County.

Lozar and other AFP Members joined our friends from Our Money, Our Transit at a public hearing on building a “bus rapid transit” project in Eugene that would disrupt local businesses, serve very few residents and be tremendously costly.  Jeff wrote me that he got over his nerves and the crowd was very appreciative of his remarks.  He was so good, he was even quoted in the Register Guard’s coverage of the hearing!

Without putting too fine a point on it, this is why we spend time at Chapter meetings teaching AFP University courses.  This is a “win” on a personal and public level for Jeff, but also for AFP.  Each of us may find out we have skills we didn’t know we had, if we can just get outside our expectations of what we can accomplish.  What are you prepared to do for freedom?

Protect Your Right to Vote

Oregon’s “Vote by Mail” system is wide open to fraud of various kinds.  Secretary of State Kate Brown is seeking to increase the ways fraud can be committed through HB 2256.  This bill will receive its first hearing on Monday, February 14 in the House Rules Committee.

Among other bad provisions, HB 2256 would change the current requirement that all unused ballots be destroyed by County Elections officials immediately after 8:00 pm on election day.  The practical effect is that thousands of blank ballots would be sitting around in elections offices in the days after voting has ended, but during which votes are still being counted.  The potential for mischief is obvious.  While some argument can be made that a few blank ballots may be needed for a variety of reasons, any ballot that is different from the one filled out by the voter should be a different color so that it can be easily distinguished.

AFP is urging its Members to contact their Legislator to urge a “No” vote on HB 2256.  If you would like to write a letter in opposition to be included in the public record, please complete it by Monday and email it to [email protected] We encourage Members to also contact Rep. Andy Olson, the Rules Committee Co-Chair at 503-986-1436.  To find your Legislators contact information, CLICK HERE*.
